Grant Application Process

The People's United Community Foundation encourages grant proposals from organizations that support our objectives and meet our giving guidelines. Please review our focus areas, giving guidelines and eligibility requirements prior to submitting your online grant application.

PLEASE NOTE: On August 16, 2013, our grant application was changed to reflect our move to a Results Based Accountability (RBA) framework. Grant Requests

The majority of People's United Community Foundation grants are less than $10,000, with the average grant being between $2,500 and $7,500. If this is your first time applying for a grant from the People's United Community Foundation, we recommend your request fall within our average grant size. This does not imply that the Foundation will approve the amount requested, nor does it guarantee funding. The minimum grant request amount is $2,500.

As a regional Foundation, the volume of grant requests we receive far exceeds the number of requests we are able to fund. Therefore, not all of the organizations that are eligible will receive funding, or at the level of funding requested. On average, only 50% of the grant requests received by People's United Community Foundation are funded.

People's United Community Foundation supports local United Ways across our footprint through the People's United Bank Employee Match Campaign. Due to this annual giving campaign, grant requests from United Way chapters are not accepted.

Greater Boston – Grant Request Procedures

If you are seeking funding for an organization/program in the Greater Boston area, please review our grant request procedures for this market prior to submitting an application.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for a grant from People's United Community Foundation, organizations must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Must be a recognized public 501(c)3 nonprofit organization
  • Must operate or serve individuals within the cities/towns that People's United Bank does business
  • Grant request must fit within our three areas of focus (community development, youth development and affordable housing)
  • Organizational category and/or the program/service must NOT be listed on PUCF's ineligible activities. Ineligible list

Applicant Guidelines

In addition to the above minimum requirements, organizations must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Funding requests should be for a program or service. Capital campaigns are ineligible.
  • Minimum request amount is $2,500.
  • Funding requests will be considered during 3 granting cycles per year.*
  • Only one application per 12 month period is allowed. (Ex. A request submitted for the February deadline must then wait to submit by the deadline for the same or later cycle, the following year).
  • Only one grant will be awarded per organization per year.
  • Funding requests will only be accepted electronically via our online application system.

We seek proposals that demonstrate the following:

  • Strong leadership that will significantly strengthen communities
  • Sound administration and financial condition
  • Competency in organizational activities that are crucial for success
  • Effective board governance
  • Ability to create a positive impact and produce results
  • Ability to provide clear evaluation metrics
  • Partnerships and collaborations with other organizations
  • Organizations that serve as a model for other non-profit groups

To help determine eligibility, a summary of the program/service for which you are seeking funding for may be requested.

Grant Cycles

In 2013, People’s United Community Foundation transitioned to trimester grant cycles. Below are the application deadline dates and the month in which grant decisions will be made.

How to Apply for a Grant

People's United Community Foundation does not accept paper applications. Please submit all applications electronically through our online grant system.

To submit a request, please follow the "APPLY NOW" link below, which will direct you to Foundation Source, our online grants management provider. Continue to read our additional application procedures and then click on the "START" button at the bottom of the page.

Applications can be saved prior to submitting your final grant request to PUCF. You will receive an email from Foundation Source which will include a link to access your saved application. Please be sure to save the email/link. When you are ready to submit your application, you must click on "SUBMIT" for PUCF review.

Due to the volume of applications we receive, kindly refrain from calling or emailing regarding the status of your application. We will contact you if additional information is necessary and you will be notified as soon as a decision has been made.

Final Report

If your organization received previous funding from People's United Community Foundation, a final report is required to be eligible for future funding and must be attached to your online application when reapplying.

Final reports should be a 2-3 page summary that addresses the individual goals, strategies and evaluation metrics provided in your last online application. The results should be defined in clear, measurable terms and demonstrate how PUCF’s funding had an impact on helping your organization accomplish its goals. Success stories can also be included, but must be in addition to the criteria mentioned above.
